George Jackson
George was born and raised in Elizabeth City, NC, where he now lives following an academic and professional career spanning more than 50 years, mostly in the greater tidewater region. George attended East Carolina University, and later earned graduate degrees from William & Mary, University of North Carolina, and Georgetown University.
He has served on the governing board of various not-for-profit organizations, and enjoys a bit of local notoriety stemming from a four-day trek along the North Carolina/Virginia dividing line, beginning at the Atlantic shoreline and ending at the Suffolk Scarp. At present, he is involved in publishing a revised edition of An Introduction to Snakes of the Dismal Swamp Region of North Carolina and Virginia, written and illustrated by his cousin, Donald Brothers.
One of George’s goals as a board member is to heighten awareness of the interdependence between northeastern NC’s wetlands, and those surrounding the southern Chesapeake Bay, a notion stemming in large part from working with participants and leaders of coastal Carolina waterway tours for teachers sponsored by Lynnhaven River Now.
